Description


Fort Pratapgad is one of the forts built by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and is a witness to his prowess.

Afzal Khan was killed by Maharaja at the foot of this fort. Afzal Khan, who came to Swarajya with a huge army, was invited by Shivaji Maharaja for a meeting and as soon as a fight broke out, he was killed. With the help of a handful of troops, Gorilla war technics (Ganimi Kava) Afzal Khan's massive army was defeated at the Battle of Wai.

With the belief that they were achieving success with the grace of Bhavanimata, Shivaji Maharaj erected a temple of Bhavanidevi at Pratapgad.

Pratapgarh also witnessed the bravery of Jiva Mahale who faced the attack to protect Shivaji Maharaj. The saying 'Hota Jiva Mhanun Vachla Shiva' became popular since then.

Even today, one can understand that Pratapgad, surrounded by dense jungles, was not only difficult but impossible to conquer.
