Kas Lake & Ghatai Devi Ghatai Devi, Kas   |   Reservoir

Description

There is a temple of Ghatai Devi in the dense forest six kilometres from the left side fork of the Kas Plateau. After climbing 20-25 steps through the recent arch, the temple of Ghatai Devi is visible.

There is another small temple, from where you can see the beautiful waterfalls gushing down in the valley during the rainy season. This area refreshes the mind due to its natural beauty and sanctity.

The festival of Ghatai Devi is celebrated on Paush Purnima. Pilgrims come from many remote villages for this festival.

On the other side of the Kas Plateau is the Kas Lake. The British created this lake around 1855. Kas lake was created by building a small dam on the fourth side and taking the support of the mountains on the three sides.

The Kas Lake has been serving the entire Satara city since then.

Another feature of this lake is that the water was conveyed to Satara city through the siphon method in earlier times using the natural slope. Now it comes through a closed channel.

The perennially overflowing Kas Lake is more exposed to the surrounding green hills. During the rainy season, the area looks like heaven, thanks to the blanket of fog covering it.

Another interesting fact is that the source of the Urmodi river is Kas lake itself. Small wildlife still exists in large numbers in the surrounding forests, and Kas Lake has become a watering hole for them. That is why it is advisable to visit Kas Lake and the plateau area with utmost discipline without disturbing the wildlife.

Carnivorous plants like Drosera are another feature of the Kas plateau. These plants are insectivorous. A sticky liquid oozes near the pollen. As soon as insects are attracted to it, they stick to this liquid. The flower absorbs the protein-rich material of the insect and throws out the skeleton.

Kas Plateau is considered a 'miracle of nature'. In that sense, it is not a tourist destination, but an ecological pilgrimage. Kas Plateau, at a height of 1430 meters above sea level, is situated in the western hills just 21 km from Satara, and this place is a must-see for its exquisite beauty.
