Description


This fort is known by many names like Satara's Fort, and Saptarshi's Fort. This fort is located in the west of Satara city and is a place of historical importance.

This triangular-shaped fort, situated at a height of 1073 meters above sea level, was built by Shilahar king Bhojraja in 1190. Yadav Raja had this fort from 1200 to 1300.

Khilji, Bahamani and then Nizamshah and Adilshah owned it for some time. It was conquered by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1657 after the killing of Afzal Khan.

In 1666, Adil Shah took over the fort and then in 1675 the fort returned to Swarajya. After Shivaji Raja, Rajaram Maharaj moved his capital here in 1698 and the historical importance of the fort increased.

Aurangzeb conquered this fort in 1700 AD and named it 'Azimatara'. Then in 1706 he came to Tararani and on 12 January 1708 Chhatrapati Shahu was crowned here. In 1818, the British abolished the Sansthan on Ajinkyataraya.

Currently, there is a tar road that leads you to this fort. You can reach the fort in 10 minutes by car. There are two entrances to the fort. Inside the fort, you will find the temples of Hanuman, Mangalai, and Lord Mahadev. Here is a part of the main building of the palace from which its general structure can be seen.

There are seven tanks and one well on the fort. From here you can see the surrounding areas, Satara city, Chandan-Vandan, Vairatgad, Sajjangad, and Jarandeshwar forts. It takes one to one-and-half hours to walk around the fort.
