Kas Plateau-the master-stroke place of Satara Kas   |   Pushpavaibhav Plateau

Description

Kas Plateau is situated on the high hills of Sahyadri range in western ghats, 22 kilometers from Satara City in Maharashtra state of India. It is known as Maharashtra’s valley of flowers. The area of the plateau is approximately 1,000 hectare.

Kas Plateau has become the biggest reason to visit Satara in recent times. This plateau covered with floral splendour has been registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and the number of tourists visiting here has increased tremendously.

This place attracts tourists from the country and abroad for monsoon tourism. July-August is the flowering season on the Kas plateau. The colour of the plateau changes every week due to the wide variety of flowers growing here.

An important feature of the Kas Plateau is that many of the flowers seen here are endemic. It means these flowering plants grow only on the Kas plateau.

The Kas Plateau is a treasure trove of endangered plants as well as rare plants. Hundreds of types of flowers such as Amri, Deepkadi, Sita Aswam, Kandilpushp, Erio Colon, Pink Balsam, Yellow Sonki, Abhali, Kavala, Siropegia, Abolim, Ranhald add to the beauty of the Kas Plateau.

Aquatic plants like Karvi and Kumudini, which bloom once in seven to nine years, also pay off in the blink of an eye.

The flower 'Y Tura' is actually the Tura in the crown of Satara. This small white flower in the shape of the English letter Y has become the identity of Satara. As the first record of this flower was found in Satara, its botanical name includes 'Satara'. The name is 'Aponogaton satarensis'.

Not only is the Kas plateau an area of endemic, rare flowering plants, but the Kas also produces new species. So researchers and botany students come to Kas plateau to study the flora.
