Description


Sajjangarh is located at a distance of 18 km from Satara city. This fort is the abode of ancient Ashvalayan sages. Hence the ancient name of this fort was Ashwalayan Gad. Then in the eleventh century, Shilahar Raja built this fort and named it 'Parli Fort' because of the Parli village at its base.

During the Mughal period it was given the name 'Navarsatara'. Shivaji Maharaj conquered this fort on 2nd April 1673. He named this fort as 'Sajjangarh'.

The special feature of Sajjangarh is the long-term residence of Samarth Ramdasswamy. Ramdaswamy created many of his works on this fort.

Coming to the fort, the first thing you see is the Chhatrapati Shivaji Mahadwar. Further east of the fort is the temple of Anglai Devi. Samarth found idols of Anglai Devi and Rama in Doha of Angpur. He situated the idol of Rama in the Chaphal and situated the idol of Devi on the fort. The fort has two pools with living springs. The fort has the Vrindavan of Ashokavan and Akkabai.

The main structures seen in front of its Sriram Mandir and Samarth Vrindavan i.e. Samarth's mausoleum. The idols of Sri Ram, Lakshmana, Sita and Hanuman in Sri Ram Mandir were made by Samartha from a blind man named Aranikar in Thanjavur.

This temple was built by Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The throne (Meghadambari) on the mausoleum is made of brass, with beautiful carvings done on it. It is said that this throne was situated by Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

There is a rest house near to the temple. In this rest house, the bed given by Shivaji Maharaj, the leaf box used by the Samarths, pinkadani, pot of drinking water bucket, Crutch, Gupti in crutch, stick of weed, bucket given by Machhindranath and large copper pots from which Kalyanswami used to bring the water from Urmodi river are kept.

At the back of the fort is the temple of Dhaba's Maruti. The institute has accommodation and food for the devotees at the fort.


Traditions/Festivals: For nine days Ram Navami (Birth anniversary of Lord Rama) is celebrated with great devotion.
