The tomb of Rani Saibai, the wife of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the mother of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, is located at Pal Budruk, at the base of Rajgad Fort. This tomb remains neglected to this day.
Saibai was the daughter of Mudhojirao Naik Nimbalkar of the Nimbalkar family from Phaltan. The Nimbalkars are a lineage from the Pawar clan of Tanjore. Saibai was fond of sword fighting. She married Shivaji Maharaj at Lal Mahal on May 16, 1640. At the time of their marriage, Shivaji Maharaj was 11 years old, and Saibai was 7 years old. She was the first wife of Shivaji Maharaj. At the age of 24, on May 14, 1657, she gave birth to Sambhaji Maharaj. After that, Saibai's health deteriorated due to postnatal complications. When Sambhaji Maharaj was two years old, Maharani Saibai passed away on September 5, 1659.
The Government of Maharashtra’s Planning Department has recently approved a development plan for the memorial of Rajmata Saibai, located on the banks of the Gunjavani River at Pal Khurd, Taluka Velhe, near Rajgad Fort. A social trust had been striving for years for the development of the memorial of the noble Queen Saibai Ranisahib Sarkar.
