Bara Motanchi Vihir Limb   |   village

Description

Limb, a village situated on the banks of river Krishna on the Satara-Pune route, 13 km from Satara, has a temple on the banks of river Krishna and one of the most wonderful but rare wells.

It is called the Bara Motachi Vihir, or 'well of twelve Motas' (Mota is a bag made of animal skin with a tapered mouth. It is like a large bag for carrying large quantities of water).

This is a historical well that can run twelve motas at a time. It is hexagonal and there are steps built to go down into the well. Stairs can be used from both sides.

There are the Vishnu-Lakshmi, Muralidhar, Rameshwar and other small and big temples on the river ghats in Limb.

In earlier times, water was drawn from the wells by means of moats for irrigational purposes. A manuscript inscription is visible on the arch of the well above the steps.

The temple of Shri Koteshwar, located three kilometres from Limb village, is worth a visit. Shakambhari temple is also worth visiting near Nagewadi, near Limb village.
